production of car seat covers, with an investment of 110 million dirhams (13.9 million U.S. dollars), was inaugurated Monday in the city of Kenitra.

The unit is due to produce some 200,000 car seats per month for exports to Renault and Volkswagen production sites in Spain and Portugal.

Built on an area of 27,000 square meter, the unit will generate more than 650 fixed jobs by the end of 2009. It came following the signing of an investment agreement by the Moroccan government and the French car equipment group Fa0urecia in March 2007.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony,  Minister of Industry, Trade and New Technologies, Ahmed Reda Chami, noted that the creation of such a unit testifies to the confidence of  foreign investors in the competitiveness of the Moroccan economy and in the attractiveness of Morocco in spite of the unfavourable world economic situation.

The materialisation of the project evidences also of the effectiveness of the "Emergence" plan, which focuses mainly on the car industry sector, the Moroccan official asserted.

He added that the Kingdom is determined to consolidate its competitiveness potential pertaining to this sector.

The French equipment manufacturer Faurecia is present in 29 countries and has 190 sites and 28 Research and Development Centres.  The group achieved in 2008 a turnover of 12.7 billion euros.
