UNESCO head pays tribute to Princess Lalla Meryem's actions in favour of women, children
Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Koïchiro Matsuura, paid tribute, on Thursday, to the actions of Princess Lalla Meryem, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, in favour of women and children.
In a speech at the opening of the 8th Annual Meeting of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors, which seeks to promote the Organization’s activities in post-conflict and post-natural disaster situations, Matsuura lauded the Princess’s commitment to assist women and children.
Matsuura said the meeting highlights one of the most important and innovative themes of the action conducted by Ambassadors striving to uphold the UNESCO ideals.
He voiced satisfaction at the choice of the theme which "illustrates the UNESCO's recognized capacity to place cultural, educational, scientific and communication policies at the heart of the reconstruction and assistance process."
Through immediate relief, long-term development and contribution to reconstruction, the UNESCO has significantly widened its scope of intervention and asserted the value-added of its expertise within the United Nations systems, he said.
