The European Union has granted Morocco 40 million euros (about 57.8 million U.S. dollars) to fund a support program for the basic medical coverage (BMC), local MAP news agency reported on Thursday.

RABAT - The European Union has granted Morocco 40 million euros (about 57.8 million U.S. dollars) to fund a support program for the basic medical coverage (BMC), local MAP news agency reported on Thursday.

The agreement was signed on Thursday with the aim of extending the BMC and improving access conditions to quality health services for the underprivileged populations, the report said.

Moroccan Health Minister Yasmina Baddou said, the program will help implement and generalize the Medical Assistance System (RAMED), to which the government has earmarked 1.5 billion Dirhams (about191.4 million dollars).

The EU grant will be instrumental and it will provide all the organizations implementing the BMC reform with the required technical and managerial capacities, the minister said.

Morocco hopes the program can generalize the RAMED on the poor and vulnerable population, and ensure effective access to the basic health care services for them.

EU representative in Rabat Bruno Dethomas was quoted as saying that the program provides for a support aimed to complete the care services in such a way that the persons not covered by other forms of medical insurance be covered by the BMC.

He said the "Advanced Status" recently granted to Morocco by the EU boosts bilateral relations, calling for a more significant convergence of the two parties regarding political, economic and social matters.
