Polisario's paramilitary activities in buffer zone require UN action, minister

Rabat - The paramilitary activities carried out by the separatist movement (polisario) in the Tifariti buffer zone require action on the part of the United Nations, which we expect to "take the necessary measures to restore the original situation which prevailed in the beginning of the ceasefire in the early 90s," Moroccan Communication Minister and Spokesman for the government Khalid Naciri said on Thursday.

These activites, which take place from time to time, constitute provocations, the responsibility for which lies with the separatists and the country backing them, Naciri said at a press briefing at the end of the weekly cabinet meeting.

The four rounds of the UN-sponsored negotiations on the Sahara, held in Manhasset, New York outskirts, have thus far turned up nothing, he said, adding that "the separatists' attendance is just a formality, for we know that they are attending only because a neighbouring country so wishes."
